Who the Suzuki V-Strom 250 suits

The V-Strom 250 is for riders who look first and foremost for comfort on long rides rather than sporty character. The 249 cc single-cylinder, oil-cooled engine makes about 26.5 PS (19.5 kW) and is paired with a 6-speed gearbox; owners compare the engine to a sewing machine — smooth, quiet, economical and reliable.

People praise the well-padded seat and the big-bike riding position, combined with handling far lighter than a big bike's. Real-world fuel economy runs from 32 to 48 km per litre from a 12-litre tank. One renter took a V-Strom for more than 40 days and rode it to Flores and back.

It is made for long routes: Sidemen, Mount Batur and the roads around Bali's easternmost point, where traffic is only really an issue around Uluwatu, Canggu and Ubud. A top box and side cases are included at no extra charge — panniers are far more secure than bungee cords on a rack.

When another model is a better choice

If you only need a light bike for narrow city streets and parking, the V-Strom is more than you need — a scooter such as the Honda PCX 160 is easier.

If you want a taller stance and stronger off-road ability for dirt side roads, the Kawasaki Versys-X 250 is the more enduro-oriented choice, and for a sporty character look at the MT-25.
