About Getting a Local License

Various sources often suggest getting an Indonesian license (SIM) as a workaround, and it is genuinely possible. But there's one condition that matters: you can only legally hold one if you have a KITAS, Indonesia's residency permit. Without that, in any serious situation it may turn out your local license isn't valid — and you'd be finding that out at exactly the moment you least want to.

The Bigger Risk: Insurance Won't Pay

This is the part that actually matters. If you're in an accident without a valid motorcycle license and a matching IDP, most travel insurance policies treat that as riding illegally and simply decline the claim. That's not a technicality that gets waived for tourists — it's a standard exclusion written into most policies.

Medical care in Bali is far from cheap, and the bill for it tends to get multiplied by how frightened, urgent, and serious the situation feels at the time. Even a moderate injury — a broken bone, a procedure, a short stay — can run into the thousands of dollars, and a serious accident or a medical evacuation can go far beyond that. Without insurance backing you up, all of it comes out of your own pocket, on the spot, in a country where you don't have the safety net you'd have at home.

In reality, most accidents happen in ordinary city traffic — an intersection, a sudden stop, someone not seeing you at a turn — not on a dramatic mountain descent. The documentation requirement doesn't scale with how adventurous your trip is; it applies the moment you're on the bike at all, even for a short ride to the beach.
