If your rental uses a Smart Key system, there's no key to insert — just a fob to carry. Starting and locking work the same way on every bike; what's different between Honda and Yamaha is how the fob shows you the status — let's go through that in detail.

Starting the Bike

  1. Put the kickstand up.
  2. Turn on the ignition (turn the ignition knob to ON).
  3. Hold in the front brake lever.
  4. Press the start button.

That's it — no key insertion, no extra steps. As long as the fob is somewhere on you (pocket, bag), the bike recognizes it automatically.

Locking the Handlebars When You Park

  1. Turn the handlebars fully to one side until they stop.
  2. Turn the ignition the opposite direction — the handlebars lock.

The Fob: Honda

Honda's fob has two buttons:

  • 🔔 Bell button — sounds an alert on the bike so you can find it in a crowded parking area.
  • 🔑 Key button — a short press shows the current status: a 🟢 green light means the bike is active, a 🔴 red light means it's locked. A long press (1–2 seconds) switches it to the opposite status.

The Fob: Yamaha

Yamaha's fob works a bit differently — there's only one light, and it's red; there's no green light. Instead of color, status is shown by how the light blinks when you press the button: a short blink means the bike is active, a long blink means it's locked. A long press (1–2 seconds) switches it to the opposite status.

🛑 Locked Your Key Inside the Under-Seat Storage?

Common mistake, no big deal. First, try gently shaking and rocking the bike — that usually does it. If not, tilt the bike nose-down on a slope and try again — based on our track record, this works 10 times out of 10. Still stuck? Send us your location and we'll bring a spare seat key. And please, try not to leave the key under the seat going forward.

Our One Recommendation

Always lock the handlebars and keep your key or fob with you, especially if you're parking somewhere that doesn't feel fully secure. It takes a few seconds, and it's the single biggest thing you can do to keep both the bike and your theft insurance coverage protected (see our insurance guide).
